A haunted house, as they say

My brother-in-law and his wife who live in a government quarter just across the road from my house have a lot of stories to share about some mysterious things happening in their house at night which, science cannot explain. Since they shifted to the house about three years ago, they have noticed a number of so-called paranormal activities going on in their house especially at night. They say that they can often hear somebody walking around the rooms or somebody flushing water in the toilet and coming out, or some mysterious sounds in and around the house. Almost all of their guests have the same complaints and they now believe that something is not right in the house.

My brother-in-law, Mr. Santabir Rai who is also a visually impaired like me, is one particularly bold man. He can dare to live even alone whenever his wife goes to her hometown. He says that ghosts are just invisible spirits and that they cannot physically harm him. He says that a couple of times, he was even jerked awake by some unknown touch and almost at the same time, he could hear some creaking sound of the floor-planks of his room as though somebody has just stepped over it. Sometimes, they can also hear footsteps coming up their stairs and the creaking sound of the bed in the living-room as if somebody was sitting down over its edge.

While my brother-in-law himself has not been personally affected, his wife has never been in good health since they shifted to this house. She has been mostly sick, partly because of her weakness as a heart patient, and partly, as they believe, being in a haunted house. Recently, she got infections in her eyes and she almost lost her sight. They brought in a number of shamans and gomchens to perform rituals to cleanse their house spiritually, but none seemed to work. Finally, she decided to go to her hometown in Samtse to seek other forms of traditional healing and she went home. In samtse, her eyes began to heal naturally and she could regain her sight after consulting a few traditional healers. She did not stop her medication prescribed by her doctor though. After living in her hometown for over a month, she returned to Thimphu, to her haunted house, fully recovered and healthy. But no sooner did she arrive here than her eyes began to swell up again and began to lose sight. The doctor confirmed that her infection has returned again. She struggled for a few months, relying on the treatments given by her doctor but things did not improve. So, last week, she once again decided to go back to her hometown and now it seems the pain in her eyes has drastically subsided while she is yet to recover her sight fully.

I don’t know whether it’s a mere coincidence but even their neighbours believe that it’s a haunted house. My brother-in-law and his wife had learned that once a Bengali couple had lived in that house and that the wife had committed suicide in the house following a hot argument. That was a few decades ago. Then last Sunday afternoon, we were basking just before his house when one of his neighbours popped out to join us in the conversation. Ms. Monu Tamang, my brother-in-law’s immediate neighbor narrated another horrifying story. It has been 26 years since she moved to the house where she lives today and she has the living memories of what had happened in her neighbourhood since she moved in. She told us that the apartment in which my brother-in-law is currently living is truly a haunted house. She said that she intentionally did not tell them thinking that they might get scared. She said that nobody lasts in that house for more than 2 to 3 years. My brother-in-law was the 9th family to move in because all those moved in decided to move out to either private apartments or another government house because of mysterious disturbances in that house. She told us that when she moved in 1989, there was a forest guard and his family in that house. Then his wife died a tragic death in 1990 during child delivery. Since then, anybody who moved in has not been able to dare to challenge the unknown. She was saying even her guests who slept in the living room would often hear the sound of cooking in the kitchen in the middle of the night, from across the balcony that connects the two apartments. Now the good news is that another quarter is getting vacated soon in the adjacent block and my brother-in-law has already applied for it at NHDCL. We all encouraged him to shift the house as soon as possible.

Author’s note

Many of you may not believe in ghosts but I feel that if we believe in Gods, we should believe in ghosts too, because they are two opposite ends. If we believe in the good, then we should also believe in the evil. I have the middle-path approach to looking at the worldly phenomena. We are surrounded by so many mysteries and confusions, which science is trying to find ways to explain everyday. But I also believe that one particular incident can be looked at from various angles: scientific, spiritual or social. So at the end of the day, it’s upto you all to take it as you believe. Thanks.
