In a society which does not yet fully accept persons with disability among its so-called respectable members, she has walked an extra mile to show to the world around her that disability is certainly not the ultimate end of hope. She has shocked her parents, siblings, relatives and friends by consciously choosing to walk a path, not so frequently taken by people in the world, despite the knowledge that she would have to overcome some of the unforeseen challenges on the way.

A few days back, I came across a post on a Facebook page that described how a buffalo in a slaughterhouse in Hongkong knelt down and cried, begging for his life when the workers tried to drag him through the slaughterhouse door. The workers tried hard to push and pull the poor creature, but it would not move an inch.

It was in 1999 when I actually realized the real impact of wastes on our physical environment and economy. Until then, I simply picked up litters from the school campus only because it was what we were required to do during the social works hour and I had not been convinced why it had to be actually done other than making the physical surroundings clean.

I feel there is nothing more sad than to find somebody dead and nobody knows who he is. On Wednesday evening, 9th July 2014, I was watching BBS Television and I was waiting for the 9 o’clock news. Suddenly an announcement came on: “A body of an adult man has been fished out of Wangchu River at Olakha by police on 5th July 2014. The man wearing blue jeans and a black shirt has a prosthetic leg. The body is kept in the mortuary of JDW National Referral Hospital and the relatives are requested to collect the body as soon as possible.” The announcement instantly sent a wave of sadness through my body and made me wonder about this unknown soul.

I strongly believe that opportunities do not come to those who wait for them and I feel it is this principle that has guided me forward till date. I seized most of the opportunities that came my way and gathered courage to swim across the ocean of life all alone deriving new energy and strength from the hurdles I often tumbled upon.

How often do you complain about the food you are served?
